Hello to all of our customers as we wait..and wait…and wait… for the summer boating season to finally begin. Along with everyone else we are eagerly awaiting the reappearance of the sun. If you see a strange yellow glow in the sky, run for your boat and enjoy it while it lasts!

To all who weren’t around here over Memorial Day weekend, an impromptu BBQ took place here at the marina. It was planned on too short notice to notify everybody but whoever showed up had a great time. Special thanks to Jay and Kim of the Kimberley Jean for use of their hot dog cart and donation of all the hotdogs, and to the Carroll family for use of their snow cone machine and all of the supplies with it!

As you can see, the picnic area has been enlarged and cleaned up. Horseshoe pits are now there along with a firepit, which just needs completion of a spark arrestor to be operational. The firepit was requested by some slip customers and approved by our fire inspector. Please enjoy the area with your friends and families. After the crew is somewhat caught up with the spring rush of recommissioning and repairs, more cosmetic work will be done around the marina. Speaking of the crew, we are happy to have all 3 of our sons working with us. Carmen Jr. is working in the service dept while Kevin and Steven are handling all of our detailing, and they are all working hard and doing a great job for us.

Special event this weekend-Saturday June 27-US Coast Guard Free Vessel Safety check by an Auxiliary Member. This free service will take place right here on our docks between 9 and 12 and is strictly voluntary. He will check for compliance with federal and state requirements and advise what needs updating or improving. He will then give your boat a sticker to show your efforts to comply and you will have the security of knowing your vessel is ready for any safety inspection that may occur while you are out on our waters.

Birdsall Engineering was here on 6/15 to begin plans for dredging. So far it looks like dredging will begin this fall, after all permits and approvals are obtained. We hope that the dredging will also finally take out the infamous stump between us and the Legion, too!

We have also begun the application and permit process for the fencing of the lot across the street which will be utilized for winter storage of boat. A mass clearing was conducted on that lot this past spring, taking away 5 dumpsters of accumulated debris.

Please check out our new website-address the same-www.mermaidontheriver.com-but it has been completely redesigned and has a lot of good information. Also check on the side of the garage by the main dock-we are using that area for announcements etc that may be of interest to you. Eventually we will get a regular outdoor bulletin board but for now that will be where you can find updated info.

Also, I would like to get e-mails for our customers to update you on events, so if you would like to be on our e-mail list, please send an email to mermaidscovemarina@verizon.net and I will add yours to the list.

On a personal note, many of you know we celebtated the birth of a new granddaughter in April. Brooke was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate which is being successfully treated. In thanks for our beautiful baby and the world class treatment she is getting, we are raising money for the charity Smile Train, which repairs these defects for free in third world countries. 100% will of course go to Smile Train. Weekends I have been trying to have homemade goodies for sale to benefit them and will continue to do so over the summer. Thanks to all who have helped out with this effort!

Now a note from the business end: We had inherited the concept of Yearly Dockage contracts from Sails Aweigh. However, we have come to realize that we will need to change to the traditional idea of Seasonal Slip contracts and will no longer be issuing the Yearly Dockage agreements. As the Yearly contracts expire, we will offer a month to month contract until the start of either winter storage, which begins November 1, or Spring Seasonal time, which begins April 15th, depending on when your contract expires. After that, winter storage fees or Seasonal slip fees (depending on when contracts expire) will apply to all vessels, whether on land or in the water.  We know this is a change from previous practices here and hope that with this early notification, everybody has time to plan accordingly.

Finally, we want to ask that you give us any suggestions about what you need to make this marina a place that meets your boating needs. We will continue with improvements as time goes on. We would like to thank all of our customers who are helping make Mermaid’s Cove a success by servicing with us, patronizing our parts store, and by referring us to your friends and relatives. Thank you!
